God has a plan for your life. He has a plan for everyone, primarily those who are in Christ. If you are a Christian, you are in front of the line for God’s blessings which include deliverance from spiritual bondage. Jesus called deliverance “the children’s bread.” (Read Matthew 15:21-28.) Consider practicing the following as you seek deliverance:
- Practice repentance. In Isaiah 58, God rebuked Israel for seeking Him but not changing their lifestyle. Repentance or turning from sin can be done in a moment, but it is also a lifestyle of turning from sin and turning to God– ie. choosing God over sin. Repentance can close old doors on the enemy and can also keep you from opening new doors or reopening old ones.
- Trust God. Solomon said, “Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding” (Proverbs 3:5). Learning to trust God when you can’t see Him or when your circumstances say differently can be hard, but you can also ask God for help. In Luke 17:5, Jesus’s apostles realized that they lacked faith and so said to Jesus, “Increase our faith!” You can ask God to help you to trust Him. He is the one who most loves you and wants you free from spiritual bondage, and the more you trust Him, the easier it will be for Him to lead you for your deliverance– ie. the likelier you will be to follow His leading.
- Learn about spiritual warfare and the enemy’s MO. Paul said, “We do not wrestle against flesh and blood but against principalities and powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this age, against spiritual hosts of wickedness in the heavenly places” (Ephesians 6:12). Paul also told the Corinthians to restore a church member to fellowship “in order that satan might not outwit us, for we are not unaware of his schemes” (2Corinthians 2:11). Knowing some of satan’s foundational tactics against a believer will help you to recognize areas where he’s at work in your life. It takes away your ignorance and equips you to push him out or ban him from that area of your life. This will be helpful as you travel toward deliverance.
- Get support. Tell two or three Christians you trust about your need and search for deliverance (or you can kee that out if you feel it’s best), and ask them to hold you up in prayer. This can provide some prayer covering for you and also help you connect with the proper ministry. If you don’t have someone to pray for you, ask God to send you support and encouragement.
