Paul said that “our wrestle is not against flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the powers of this dark world and against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly realms” (Ephesians 6:12). When believers encounter resistance, and when there is spiritual oppression, these “spiritual forces of evil” are always present. Paul said to resist with the full armor of God.
Just like the gifts of the Spirit in 1Corinthians 12, Paul did not specify every single piece of armor in the full armor. Rather, he gave an overview of the armor rather than specifics. One part of the full armor is fellowship or a covering of love. A Christian who is isolated from fellowship is not under a covering of love and therefore is easy pickings for satan. Here are some steps you can take as you seek deliverance ministry:
- Learn some of satan’s tactics. Learn how satan operates in the life of a Christian. Some of his weapons against Christians are ignorance, false spiritual experiences (spiritual experiences where the enemy poses as God to deceive and mislead a Christian), distractions, busyness, confusion, and discouragement. When you’re seeking deliverance, you can guarantee that you’ll have to contend with those weapons and maybe more. The more you know satan’s tactics, the better prepared you are to recognize them (eg. suddenly having a lot of things to do or people to see at times you’ve set apart to spend time in prayer) and therefore avoid them.
- Ask God to connect you with mature Christians. Mature Christians are simply Christians who are growing spiritually in both understanding and obedience or corresponding works. These people are invaluable to have beside you if you’re in a spiritual battle or seeking deliverance from spiritual bondage.
- Sanctify your life to God. This isn’t as easy as some people make it out to be. To sanctify yourself to God means to separate yourself from the world (ie. worldly values and pursuits) and devote yourself to God. Hosea was a man who God called to be a prophet and to marry a prostitute named Gomer. Gomer kept sleeping with other men, and Hosea kept bringing her back as an example of how God’s people kept committing adultery with other idols and pursuits, yet God kept bringing them back to Himself. To ‘sanctify’ yourself to God would be the same as a prostitute giving up that lifestyle and devoting herself only to her husband.
