Here are some things to keep in mind and practice as you seek deliverance:
- Not all spiritual bondage are created equal. Some types of spiritual bondage only require a command to be given in Jesus’s name for the demon(s) to leave. Some instances require more. And some more instances require a lot more. Some people think that you should be able to dispatch demons and spiritual bonds with just a command in Jesus’s name. We see in the New Testament that this isn’t the case. In Mark 9:38, John tells Jesus, “Teacher, we saw someone who does not follow us casting out demons in Your name.” Those people were having success. In Acts 19, seven men try to cast out a demon, but it beats them up instead of leaving. Jesus’s apostles were successful casting out demons till they encountered an epileptic in Luke 9. And all demons that Jesus commanded out immediately left until He encountered Legion in the region of Gadara in Mark 5 which, being a different situation, required Jesus to ‘release’ rather than ‘cast out’ the demons.
- Find out what type of bondage you’re dealing with. After failing with the epileptic, the disciples asked Jesus, “Why couldn’t we cast out the demon(s)” (Matthew 17:19). The more you know about what you’re dealing with, the more equipped you are against disappointment, discouragement, disillusionment, etc. If you’re dealing with something heavy and you see several deliverance ministers but don’t get deliverance, you’ll probably become severely discouraged unless you know why your bondage wasn’t resolved.
- Get spiritual support. Solomon said, “Two are better than one because they have a good return for their labor” (Ecclesiastes 4:9). Ask one or two Christians you trust to stand with you in prayer as you seek deliverance.
- Trust God. David said, “Commit your way to the Lord; trust also in Him, and He will bring it to pass” (Psalm 37:5). God is the one who loves you most and who died and rose again to redeem and save you in body, soul, and spirit. Trust Him.
