We are in the last days. Jesus said in Matthew 24:12, Jesus said that most people will lose the ability and desire to love others besides themselves due to an increase in loss of respect for absolute truths. It seems like we’re living in a building that is on fire but where people are so distracted and enthralled by entertainment and other things that they can’t see how bad things really are.
In this environment of distraction and lovelessness, demonization and spiritual oppression have increased as well. Many people are suffering with mental illnesses and other problems that are really spiritual problems. If you are seeking deliverance from spiritual problems or spiritual bondage, the following points can help you as you seek deliverance:
- Sanctify your life. The New Testament tells Christians to not just take an initial step of salvation, of water baptism, or even of the Holy Spirit baptism; rather, Christians are admonished to continue on to sanctification– what Jesus called ‘taking up one’s cross and denying one’s self’. Paul said, “Present your bodies as a living sacrifice, holy and pleasing to God which is your reasonable service. And do not be conformed to the pattern of this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind” (Romans 12:1-2). Sanctification helps while you’re seeking deliverance and especially after deliverance so that the spiritual bondage that was broken doesn’t come back.
- Connect with mature believers. 1John 2:12-14 shows us that there are three types of Christians: babes in Christ (self-centered), young men (others-centered), and fathers (God-centered). Being connected with someone from one of the last two groups would be very beneficial as you pursue deliverance. If you can’t find mature Christians, ask a few Christians you trust for prayer support as you seek deliverance, and ask God to encourage you.
- Trust God for your deliverance and be willing to persevere. God works through people, but you must trust God above all others as you seek your deliverance. Also, your deliverance may be a while coming, so be ready to persevere. “Then [Jesus] told them a parable to the end that men always ought to pray and not lose heart” (Luke 18:1). Even if you are unable to pray, do not give up. Keep knocking until a door opens.
