Before Jesus came to earth, God sometimes delivered the oppressed. But from the time Jesus’s ministry began until the end of time, God’s will is that all who are in spiritual captivity be delivered: “God, who at various times and in various ways spoke in time past to the fathers by the prophets, has in these last days spoken to us by His Son” (Hebrews 1:1-2). The following are some helpful things you can do as you seek deliverance:
- Vet deliverance ministries. Don’t be afraid to contact more than one deliverance ministry at the same time. Ask them how they do deliverance, how long they’ve been doing deliverance, how many have been delivered in their ministry, if they’ve ever dealt with a bondage issue like the one you’re dealing with. Also call local churches in your area. Some churches have a deliverance ministry while others that don’t have a deliverance ministry will have one or more people within the church who pray for those in need of deliverance as a practical expression of Jesus’s love.
- Ask other Christians for support. The Bible says that Christians are to be one body with many parts (1Corinthians 12:12-27). Isolation is bad for a Christian. Tell some Christians you trust that you’re seeking deliverance, and ask them for prayer support. If you don’t have anyone to pray with, ask God to send you someone or/and circumstances that will encourage you. Nehemiah 8:10 says, “The joy of the Lord is your strength.” Without motivation (ie. strength), you won’t be able to stay on track regarding deliverance.
- Be aware of the enemy’s tactics. Ephesians 6 talks about the full armor of God, however, the armor isn’t something you just put on by saying, “I put on…” Rather, the armor is spiritual, therefore, it is about the way you live or your lifestyle: if you live righteously, then the breastplate of righteousness will be applied to your spirit man; if you persist in believing God against the odds, then the shield of faith will be applied to your spirit man; etc. (Read 2Corinthians 6:3-10.)
- Decide to trust that God wants you free. As mentioned above, this is the shield of faith which the Bible says quenches “all the fiery darts of the wicked one” (Ephesians 6:16). Persevere. God will see you through.
